Four Things to Think about in a Trike Conversion

You've made the choice to stay in the wind, so you want it to be the most comfortable and affordable conversion process possible. As with any custom motorcycle work, gathering the parts and experts to get the job done needs to be planned. Here are four things to think about as you get started.

Benefit from advice from an expert. It helps to talk to a trike fitment expert who can help you through the initial selection options. You can't get this information just by browsing online - it takes a conversation with at least ten questions and answers before we can give you a package that will fit your specific needs. You *can* do a conversion in stages. You don't have to convert the whole motorcycle at once if you need to space out the payments, or just want to see how a particular feature works first. For example, you can choose not to rake your front tree. But this will have handling consequences If you choose not to get reverse, you will just learn how to park to easily get out of the spot. Many trike riders find they never need reverse. Steering dampeners can be added after-the-fact.
Wheels wheels wheels. If you want custom wheels that no one else has, these will cost money. If you want front wheels to match back wheels, you have limited choices. Changing wheel selections mid-stream has time consequences because of lead times of making wheels, and other implications on offsets needed to mount things like bodies. Trike bodies are not always plug and play - they need fabrication adjustments. Spacers need to be fabricated, and installed to make your body fit with your wheel selection. Many motorcycle parts these days are made to order - so start the ordering process soon.

A Harley Davidson Road King can be converted to a trike using many different options and quality brands of trike conversion kit. The first step is to put a new suspension on the back in place of your rear back motorcycle wheel. This will change the motorcycle from two to three wheels. You can use either independent rear suspension or a fixed axle. Next, you will need to rake out the triple tree to modify the "trail" of the vehicle for safe handling. You may also need to modify, or replace your motorcycle exhaust.

Independent Suspension: When a trike has independent rear suspension each rear wheel moves vertically independent of the other. This kind of conversion kit has the most parts of any trike conversion kit. Independent suspension kits are usually the most expensive type of conversion.
A fixed axle suspension converts most belt or chain driven motorcycles into a trike. With a fixed axle the left and right side are tied together. The conversion takes only a few hours by a competent mechanic. Many of these also have a limited-slip differential (LSD). LSD is a type of differential gear arrangement that allows for some difference in angular velocity of the output shafts. This means that the wheels both stay powered when you need them to.

Do I really have to spend the extra money on raking the triple tree on my trike? The answer depends on how much you value your arms and spine. The trike will be difficult to turn and handle if you do not do it. Raking the triple tree essentially moves your front wheel forward and reduces the trail. Trikes require a smaller trail number than a two-wheeled motorcycle.
Do I need to change out the rubber mounts? Yes, sometimes you do need to change these during the conversion. We will ask you about how many miles have been put on your bike since the last time they were replaced. Why are Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts So Expensive?

We get a lot of questions about the cost of aftermarket motorcycle parts compared to aftermarket car parts. This difference is especially prominent on trike conversions and wheels. When we quote a trike conversion and try to match rear wheels to a custom front wheel, the delta between the prices is pretty hefty.

The answer lies in basic economics - compared to other vehicle types, the motorcycle market is very small which means that it is very expensive to produce something custom. If the motorcycle industry were larger, then the price of the motorcycle parts would be closer to the prices of the car parts.

Question: "I've been searching online for motorcycle wheels and they are so expensive compared to car rims"
Answer: There are a lot more registered cars than motorcycles. Click the two links below for United States statistics. For example,Florida has 7,426,955 registered cars but only 555,602 registered motorcycles

Example: It takes 7500 man hours at an average rate of $30/hr, plus materials for a manufacturer to do the research and development on a new CNC cut wheel design. If you only sell 1000 of them, then it works out to $225/wheel just in R&D Cost! Add to that the cost of product liability (~150/wheel) and the cost of labor, materials, finishing and capital to make the product itself. And if the company wants to stay in business, then they need a fair amount of profit. So this easily puts the wheel price up at $800 or more. Add something fancy like solid billet CNC machining and a one-off design, and you are looking at a $5000 motorcycle wheel.

Question: Why aren't custom motorcycle wheels in stock?
Answer: Most motorcycle wheels are cut on demand at the manufacturer. Especially when you want something unique, or when you want to resurrect an old design. The larger manufacturers stock the most commonly purchased items but the more unique you want your design to be, the longer it is going to take to get it.

End Result of CAM Bearing Damage

All Harley motorcycle engines make a lot of noise. Loud pipes save lives. But some noises need to be paid attention to when you hear them. Noises in the cam on a Harley EVO motor sounds like a gear drive on a small block chevy. On a Twin Cam the noise sounds like grinding. On a Twin Cam the problem generally happens between 25,000 and 35,000 miles (1999 – 2006 model).

This is an example of how a failed CAM bearing can end up destroying an engine if it is not repaired quickly. This causes you to need an expensive new engine instead of a repair.

What Killed the Engine

In this photo from an Evo motor, you can see that the CAM bearing failed. The bottom half of this bearing is missing. Notice also the place where the CAM ran into the aluminum and destroyed it.

This chain reaction caused the cam to run out of its correct place, and this created massive heat. The heat then melted the breather. This caused oil to go into the crank case and not be scavenged. Now, the crank had to to run in oil (which it is not supposed to do) causing the engine to feel like it was bogging down. Finally, it melted the ignition hall sensor which finally made the engine stop running. That’s when the bike came into our shop.
